Is It Ok To Drive On Empty?

We’ve all been there. It was a nightmare of a day at work, you have no idea what to make for dinner, and all of the sudden, your gas light comes on. The absolute last thing you feel like doing is stopping and filling your gas tank, so you decide to just drive home and tackle it in the morning. We’ve all done this before, and will probably do it again in the future, but that doesn’t mean you should. Lots can go wrong if you neglect to get gas in a timely manner, so we here at Autoworks recommend you keep your car full of gas at all times. Here’s why:

You Could Run Out Of Gas

This is the most obvious one. If you don’t get gas in a timely manner, your car will eventually run out, leaving you stranded. Not only will this be embarrassing, it could be potentially dangerous. Who’s to say your car won’t quit on you in the middle of nowhere, while your cell phone is dead, in the middle of the night? That’s a scary scenario. And all you need to do to avoid it is stop and put gas in the tank. Seems much easier than the alternative, right?

You Could Damage Your Car

Your car is meant to run on fuel, so in the absence of it, things can go wrong quickly. Your fuel pump is meant to be submerged in gasoline, so when you drive on empty, it can misfire or even fail altogether. This is especially possible if you make a habit of driving on empty. Fuel pumps are expensive and complicated to fix, so simply keeping gas in your tank can be considered preventative maintenance on your vehicle.

Just Stop For Gas

These problems can be avoided simply by stopping and filling up your tank. We know work is tough, traffic is tougher, and there is political strife at home and abroad, but simply taking 10 minutes to stop by the gas station will keep you going through all of life’s little moments. If you suspect your fuel system has been damaged by constant driving on empty, or your car ran out of gas and you want to make sure everything is still in working order, make an appointment with Autoworks. We would be happy to take a look. In the meantime, just stop for gas, bud!
