You never want to take your car’s brake system for granted. If it is acting strange in any way, drive straight to our shop so we can inspect the brakes. If the brake system goes bad, you may be unable to stop your automobile. This puts you into the dangerous situation of causing a serious accident. Below, we are going to list the signs that your brake system is going bad.
ABS/Brake Warning Light
The brake system has two warning lights. You have an ABS light for the anti-lock brake system and a Brake light for the rest of the brake system and the parking brake. If either of these lights turn on when you apply the brakes or while you are driving, you’ve got a brake system problem.
Leaking Brake Fluid
If your brake system is leaking, it’s safer to have your vehicle towed to our shop. As you have seen in action films, the bad guys always cut the brake lines to release the fluid. The reason why is that your vehicle cannot stop if the brake system does not have enough fluid in it.
Overheating/Burning Odors
Another thing that can prevent the brakes from being able to slow down and stop your automobile is overheating. When the brake system overheats, you will smell strong odors coming from the brakes. The brakes will also squeal when you press down on the brake pedal.
Pulling to the Side
A rare problem with the brake system is a stuck caliper. When this happens, your automobile will pull to the side when you press down on the brake pedal. In general terms, the recommended maintenance for the calipers is to have them replaced every 60,000 miles.
Spongy/Sinking Pedal
Another problem that occurs if the brake system is going bad is changes in the brake pedal feel. Your brake pedal may give and take as you press down on it or it may sink all the way to the floor. It may also feel spongy when you press on it.
Strange Brake Noises
We mentioned above that your brakes will squeal if the brake system is getting too hot. They may also squeal if it is time to replace the brake pads. If you ignore the squealing, the pads will wear down to their metal backing and grind when you apply the brakes.
Finally, if the brake pads are worn, your vehicle may also vibrate. This can happen if there is a tiny piece of road debris stuck in the calipers, as well. Call us today to set up an appointment if you are having problems with your brakes.
